Beaches of Costa Verde
Costa Verde is located on the West coast of the Sardinia island. Originally it was just covering the villages of Gutturu 'e Flumini, Portu Maga and Piscinas, but today it covers an area nearly 47 kilometers long, going from Capo Frasca in the North to Capo Pecora promontory in the South.
Costa Verde is so beautiful, so uncontaminated and extremely isolated that some rear animal species have chosen it as their habitat ... for example the Caretta Turtle has been periodically seen lying its eggs down along Piscinas and Scivu beaches.
Costa Verde offers a spectacular sea but, sometimes it can be fearful and even hostile. Together with the North-West wind it is the undisputed protagonist of this fascinating and mysterious corner of the Sardinia Island.
The coast geological configuration varies a lot: ranging from very fine and golden sand beaches, with rocky bays and huge dark cliffs to coasts delimited by sand walls, to beaches soaked into wonderful landscapes formed by huge sand dunes and scented Mediterranean maquis.
Starting from the North side we will meet the following costal villages:
North of the Costa Verde ...
Pistis is a growing small tourist centre, it surmounts both the S'Enna and S'Arca creeks, which are very rocky and jagged, characterized by basalts and beaches shaped by the wind and by the sea action, and the 1.5 kilometers long beach of Is Arenas 'e S'Acqua and S'Ollastru which arrives to the Torre dei Corsari tourist centre.
Torre dei Corsari is a small tourist village whose name refers to Flumentorgiu's tower. From the promontory a unique sightseeing can be admired: in the south there is a beautiful bay formed by calcareous cliffs, in the North the sight reaches Punta S'Aschivoni which overlooks the gorgeous beach of Is Arenas 'e S'Acqua and S'Ollastru. It is dominated by enormous sand dunes and it is nearly one and a half kilometre long.
Tunaria, (Tonnara di Flumentorgiu) In the last century it was a fishermen village that lived on fishing and tuna processing, from which it got the name. Later on it was abandoned due to its unproductivity. The old houses and buildings have been restored and used for tourist purposes.
There is also a small rocky beach only frequented by locals.
Funtanazza was a summer colony of the Montevecchio mine, where miners' children where hosted; this colony, which has been completely abandoned for many years, plunges into the Mediterranean marquis and into a pine forest.
The beach which is nearly one kilometre long is protected from the wind by a beautiful bay, composed by basaltic volcanic rocks in which it is still possible to find fossil remains.
... finally the Costa Verde ...
Marina di Arbus is a small village situated on the far end of a slope, where there is a multicoloured Mediterranean marquis which goes to the beach.
It is characterized by a nice little dark yellow beach, whose colour is due to the iron which can be found in it, and by a series of small and beautiful pebbled coves.
Portu Maga is a long low rocky coast, which then becomes sandy.
Portu Maga is characterized by a coarse grain sand, full of shells; in fact after a sea-storm it is possible to find on the beach the well known occhi di Santa Lucia, shells, with their incredible pearly glares.
Piscinas is one of the most beautiful places in the entire Sardinia or nearly even in the whole Mediterranean. Here there is a gold landscape formed by imposing dunes 100 metres tall, piercing into the hinterland for more then 1 kilometer, and they finally plunge into an emerald sea.
The coast is very long, and it is formed by nearly 3 kilometers of a deep, fine, golden beach.
Scivu is a charming place, due to an uncontaminated nature where there are no human beings settlements.
The beach which is surrounded by high and dark sandy walls is very fine and it has magnificent golden shades, whereas an impressive transparent sea fuses the emerald green and the most intensive blue.
Capo Pecora is the Southern Costa Verde border. It is a granite promontory, shaped by the wind and the sea action.
The beach is formed by light pebbles and granitic rocks, shaped by the incessant tides, where pure white lilies forcibly grow.
... south of the Costa Verde
Portixeddu is a small coastal village, once summer residence of Fluminimaggiore inhabitants. It is located on a slope with a marvellous landscape on the sea and on the beach.
The 2 kilometers long beach is crossed by the Rio Mannu, it is characterized by very fine sand and gorgeous pine forest, where tourists can shelter from the summer heat.
Buggerru is a village lying between 2 promontories and a small tourist port, it is the only real mooring place in the whole coast.
During the last century it was one of the most important villages, even on an international basis, for zinc and lead mining exploitation.
The beach seems to be located in a fantastic no time atmosphere, thanks to the ruins of the mining buildings.
Cala domestica is one of the most beautiful sandy coves of Sardinia, is located at the end of an inlet made by an expanse of dunes and protected by two high promontories covered with Mediterranean vegetation.
The golden sandy beach is made up of cliffs, the sea is clear and blue with a beautiful shallow water suitable for recreation of children.
Masua is a wonderful bay within there are small and beautiful beaches where you can admire the breathtaking views.
A short distance from the beach rises from the sea the Pan di Zucchero, a real monument of nature, a fascinating cliff about 132 meters high, among the highest in Europe, it was created by erosion of the sea that determined isolation from the mainland.
